Balance and Fall Prevention
Falls are among the leading causes of injury and death in the United States, particularly among older adults. Patients going through inpatient rehabilitation are especially at risk. If you’ve suffered a spinal cord injury, restoring your balance and preventing falls is a major part of your recovery. Stroke, brain injury and other neurological conditions can also affect your balance because of damage to your vestibular system – part of the inner ear that is connected to your nervous system.
Our interdisciplinary team of licensed physical and occupational therapists, including certified vestibular specialists, will help with your balance and fall prevention throughout your inpatient stay and provide safety education that can help prevent falls at home.Balance training activities include:
- Muscle re-training
- Relaxation exercises
- Vestibular exercises
- Visual training
- Individual psychotherapy
- Stress reduction techniques
- Cognitive-behavioral strategies
