Locomotor Training

Locomotor Training

As part of our continuum of care, our outpatient therapy centers off the next level of treatment in spinal cord injury (SCI) rehabilitation. Our outpatient SCI Rehabilitation program includes Locomotor training, which is a process of retraining your nervous system to walk following a spinal cord injury. We work with you to re-teach walking by using a body weight support and a treadmill combined with manual assistance by our specially-trained physical therapists. We also incorporate training that promotes community engagement for safe and effective walking both in and out of the home.

Through the use of vigorous repetitive exercise, locomotor training may lead to improved neural communication and the improved ability to walk and stand. At Baylor Scott & White Rehab, we also incorporate the use of exoskeletal technology to assist in this process. Exoskeletal devices only available at select locations.
