Adaptive Driving Program

We help get you back behind the wheel, safely. Our Adaptive Driving Program provides specialized testing and training to help you reacquire driving skills following a change in your mental or physical condition. Based on your vehicle and your specific needs, we can help identify the exact adaptive equipment and training you’ll need to become a safe, independent driver. Driving is a privilege, and there is no guarantee that every patient is capable of returning to driving. Our goal is to evaluate, train and restore mobility to patients who can demonstrate they are ready to safely return to the road.

Our approach

We put you in the driver's seat of your own independence. Our instructors are occupational therapists licensed by the state of Texas as Certified Driving Instructors and Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialists. We have cars on site with adaptive hand controls, steering attachments, left foot accelerator and extensions to secondary controls.

Our driver rehabilitation specialists will help you:

  • Perform clinic-based evaluations
  • Perform in-car evaluations/training
  • Identify proper adaptive equipment
  • Assist with state licensing examinations

You may be able to benefit from our Adaptive Driving Program if you have at least one of the following medical conditions:

  • Amputation
  • Neuromuscular or orthopedic disabilities
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Stroke
  • Traumatic brain injury

Adaptive driving locations

Our Adaptive Driving Program requires large parking lots with relatively light traffic during the day. Currently, we have two locations offering driver rehabilitation services with four adaptive vehicles available for on-the-road evaluations.
