Alberto's Story

Patient Alberto Aguero after rehabilitation

Medically complex

Alberto Aguero, a 30-year-old sous chef at Cook Children's, had his life turned upside down when he suffered a ruptured vessel and respiratory failure with hypoxia (low levels of oxygen in the body tissue). Following his admission to Baylor Scott & White All Saints Hospital, Alberto's world was forever changed as he embarked on a grueling and inspiring journey of recovery.

Before his injury, Alberto led an active lifestyle, enjoying his work, regular visits to the gym and spending quality time with his loved ones. However, that fateful day brought unimaginable pain, leaving him fighting for his life. Recalling the terrifying experience, Alberto said, "After dinner, I felt a sharp pain in my stomach, followed by uncontrollable vomiting of blood. I was rushed to the hospital, where I underwent an extensive procedure to repair the ruptured vessel."

Alberto's ordeal extended beyond the physical trauma, as he found himself in a medically induced coma for an arduous two and a half weeks. The medical team worked diligently to cleanse his body of toxins and ensure the full recovery of his lungs and heart. When Alberto finally regained consciousness, he faced the daunting task of relearning how to walk and use his arms. The once self-sufficient individual found himself grappling with newfound limitations.

Motivated by the prospect of reclaiming his life, Alberto chose the Baylor Scott & White Institute for Rehabilitation – Fort Worth’s Day Neuro Program to embark on his rehabilitation journey. The remarkable testimonies of the institute's compassionate and skilled therapists resonated with him, igniting a determination to defy the odds. "I knew it would be a challenge, but I was up for it. I'm a fighter, and I wouldn't give up," Alberto said.

With unwavering support from his family and an exceptional rehabilitation team, Alberto quickly made progress toward his goals. Within a week of starting therapy, he began walking again, albeit with great effort. While regaining full use of his hands and wrists proved to be a slower process, Alberto persevered, celebrating every milestone along the way. Boxing therapy and exercises targeting his hands and wrists became pivotal in his remarkable recovery.

There was a flash of triumph that Alberto described as an "ah-ha!" moment, a turning point where he felt the joy of progress. During a therapy session, he caught an object thrown by his physical therapist, effortlessly lifting his left arm without conscious effort. It was a poignant moment that signaled the return of his physical capabilities and ignited hope within him.

Throughout his journey, Alberto acknowledged the vital role his family played in his recovery. Their support, from assisting with daily tasks to being present during educational programs, contributed significantly to his progress. "I've been so blessed and am so thankful for everything they have done,” said Alberto.

As he prepares to bid farewell to the hospital, Alberto looks forward to resuming his professional duties, traveling, and returning to the gym. He recognizes the transformative impact his rehabilitation experience has had on his perspective and cherishes life more profoundly.

Reflecting on his overall rehabilitation experience, Alberto mentioned, “You meet people that have had strokes and accidents, and you see their struggle and you motivate one another. There is such a supportive group here,” emphasizing the support, motivation, and camaraderie within the institute. The therapists' patience and dedication, along with their ability to strike a balance between pushing him and respecting his pace, left an indelible impression on him.

Alberto's journey of recovery has taught him valuable lessons about resilience and life's blessings. To others facing similar challenges, he offers heartfelt advice, "No matter how hard the task or how dire the situation, never give up. Don't ever lose hope."

In closing, Alberto expressed his profound gratitude to the therapists and everyone who supported and pushed him throughout his journey. Their dedication and belief in his ability to overcome the odds brought him to where he stands today – a testament to the human spirit's boundless strength and determination.
